Sentence:In August 1945 the United States unleashed a new weapon of mass destruction against the Japanese at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and brought an end to World War II.

Meaning:Any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.

2.Exclusiveness:

Sentence:The exclusiveness was short-lived, however.

Meaning:Not admitting of something else; incompatible.

3.Exploded:

Sentence: In 1949 the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb.

Meaning:To expand with force and noise because of rapid chemical change or decomposition, as gunpowder or nitroglycerine.

4.Preparin:

Sentence:Both nations embarked on an arms race while at the same time preparing their citizens in the event that nuclear weapons were deployed.

Meaning:To put in proper condition or readiness.

5.Shielded:

Sentence:In effect, a Cold War was being waged, and civilian populations could no longer be shielded from the violence of war.

Meaning:A broad piece of armor, varying widely in form and size, carried apart from the body, usually on the left arm, as a defense against swords, lances, arrows, etc.

6.Generated:

Sentence:The above ground explosions generated nuclear fallout.

Meaning:To bring into existence; cause to be; produce.

7.Hostility:

Sentence:With each incremental increase in the level of hostility between the two superpowers.

Meaning:A hostile state, condition, or attitude; enmity; antagonism; unfriendliness.

8.Develop:

Sentence:The need to develop and popularize civil defense procedures became more apparent.

Meaning:To bring out the capabilities or possibilities of; bring to a more advanced or effective state.

9.Techniques:

Sentence:Of the two outcomes of a nuclear explosion, firestorm and fallout, techniques to defend against radiation poisoning resulting from nuclear fallout had the only real possibility of success.

Meaning:The manner and ability with which an artist, writer, dancer, athlete, or the like employs the technical skills of a particular art or field of endeavor.

10.Available:

Sentence:Where a “fallout shelter” was not available, virtually any barrier would have to do, even a school desk or a kitchen table.

Meaning:Suitable or ready for use; of use or service; at hand.
